What is an FLL Challenge Scrimmage?
An FLL Challenge Scrimmage is an informal, practice event where FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams gather to test their robots, practice presentations, and experience a competition-like environment without the pressure of official judging or advancement.
Purpose
- To give teams a chance to practice in a real competition setting before attending a Qualifier.
- To help new teams (or those with younger members) understand how an event runs, including the robot game tables, match timing, and judging flow.
- To provide a space for learning, feedback, and improvement rather than focusing on scores or awards.
What Happens at a Scrimmage
- Robot Matches: Teams run their robots on official challenge fields, often with timed matches, but results are not used for advancement.
- Optional Judging Practice: Some scrimmages include mock judging sessions so teams can rehearse their Innovation Project, Core Values, and Robot Design presentations.
- Networking & Fun: Teams interact with other teams, share ideas, and get comfortable in a collaborative, low-stakes environment.
Why It Matters
- Scrimmages reduce competition anxiety by giving teams a preview of what to expect.
- They build confidence and teamwork as students experience the event day flow.
- They serve as an opportunity for mentors and coaches to identify areas where their teams need more preparation before a Qualifier.
